Havel’s Leaving returns to Archa; in April it heads to Seoul

On Monday, January 18, Václav Havel’s Leaving directed by David Radok will return to the Archa Theatre. After successfully presenting about 50 encore performances, all sell outs, Archa will stage twelve performances in January and February. The play, which was among the most eagerly anticipated premieres of 2008, again features Zuzana Stivínová and Jan Tříska in the lead roles. Dora Bouzková and Hana Vagnerová will alternate in the role of Bea in the winter series. Tickets to January and February performances are still available at the Archa Theatre box office.

The international theatre project FREEDOM? FREEDOM!, which was created by Czech, German and Slovak playwrights as a contribution to the anniversary of the revolutionary changes of 1989 will be performed on December 5 and 8 at the Theaterdiscounter in Berlin and the Kampnagel Theatre in Hamburg. The project also includes a production by the Archa Theatre, Window of Opportunity, directed by Jana Svobodova. Window of Opportunity is always a premiere and a finale. The performances are always created based on the given space and the given cultural-historic conditions. The project also features workshops for students from local high schools and universities, who also actively participate in the performances.

The Czech group All Star Refjúdží Band, whose members include asylum seekers from Czech refugee camps, have released their first album, Spas! (Kurdish for Thank you!). The album features vocals and instrumental contributions from musicians of nine different nationalities. The group’s songs contain elements of Chinese, Kurdish and Armenian music, although the group considers itself to be Czech and reworks classic Czech texts.

Legendary British singer Morrissey, former lead singer of The Smiths, performed in front of a live Prague audience for the first time on Thursday. Despite the relatively high ticket price, the concert at the Archa Theatre was sold out, so there wasn’t much elbow room in the hall. But no one was complaining: the sound was perfect, as was Morrissey’s performance.

Archa Theatre this year invited the renowned VerTeDance Company to collaborate on a project at Archa.lab. The VerTeDance Company, which is made up of dancers and choreographers Veronika Kotlíková-Knytlová and Tereza Ondrová, in 2005 won a Sazka Award for the dance show Tichomluvahas. The group has for a long time been working with child dancers. Their performance Forty-three Sunsets, based on The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was in 2007 danced by a ten-year-old boy and an adult dancer.

Due to health reasons, Dagmar Havlová will not appear in Archa Theatre’s forthcoming production of Leaving. The lead role of Irena, in which Dagmar Havlová was to appear, will be played by Zuzana Stivínová. David Radok has chosen Dora Bouzková to take the role of Bea. The world premiere of Leaving on the 22nd of May at Archa Theatre and the reprises in May, June and September will take place according to plan.

The directing duo SKUTR (Martin Kukučka and Lukáš Trpišovský) are preparing a new project, The Weepers, to premiere at Archa Theatre on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of September. Their last project at Archa was the performance Paradise of the Heart, Labyrinth of the World, which was also presented with great success at a string of festivals in Europe. The performance The Weepers has been created in Archa Theatre’s Archa.lab, as part of the thematic cycle “Tradition – Convention – Origin”. The specific inspiration for the performance is the Slavic folklore culture, filtered through the perspective of a city-dweller at the start of the 21st century.
