LAIBACH – KUNST DER FUGE

LAIBACH – KUNST DER FUGE

22/2/2009 20:30 - Laibach’s Fugue Art concert moved to Archa Theatre.

The Czech premiere of the multimedia project “Kunst der Fuge / Fugue Art” by the controversial Slovenian band Laibach on February 22 has been moved for technical reasons from the Church of St. Simon and Judy to Archa Theatre. “In the course of preparing the concert it turned out that several demanding technical elements were not available in the church. That’s why we chose a well-established space whose excellent equipment permits this unique project to be presented in al of its perfection,” said Borek Jiřík, the concert organizer. The date and time of the concert remain the same – February 22 at 8:00 p.m. Already purchased tickets are still valid and new ones are on sale through the Ticketpro network and at the Archa Theatre box office, Na Poříčí 26, Prague 1. The same two ticket categories are on sale as before – sitting and standing. For more information go to www.charm-music.cz.

In their concert project “Kunst der Fuge / Fugue Art” Laibach uses electronic instruments, computers and large-screen projections to reinterpret the piece of the same name by Johann Sebastian Bach. “Whereas Bach’s fugues are based largely on mathematical algorithms, we decided to use a computer program as the basic instrument. The results showed that Bach with his piece can be considered as a pioneer of electronic music and techno,“ states the band on their website. “Fugue Art“ (the name is not original to the composers) is a cycle of fourteen fugues and four rotas, which Bach composed between 1723 and 1750, while living and working in Leipzig. It is one of the most secret works which became thanks to its mysterious original purpose the subject of many different interpretations and hypotheses. According to Laibach, “Fugue Art“ hides a lot of energy and inspiration, which Czech audiences can judge in the unique space of a Baroque church. Most of the music for this project was created in 2006 and premiered in the same year at the Bach Festival in Leipzig. In May 2008, an album of the same name was released.

Laibach was created in 1980 in the Slovenian mountain town of Trbovlje. The name is a German translation of Ljubljana, where the members of the band live and work. The band became well known for their multimedia projects, electronic and industrial music, controversial political themes and opinions and reinterpretations of well-known hits such as  “Jesus Christ Superstar“, “Life Is Life“, “The Final Countdown“ and many others. They have so far released more than twenty albums and have held successful concerts all around the world. The band has also composed music for many theatre performances and participated in a number of multimedia projects. In 1984 they founded together with other Slovenian artists an informal movement called NSK (Neue Slowenische Kunst – New Slovenian Art), which is active in many different progressive cultural fields. In the early 1990s they created a virtual NSK state with its own borders, embassies and national symbols.
