MGMT consists of two musicians: Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. They met at the Wesleyan arts school in Connecticut and founded a band called Management (as this name was already taken, they changed it to MGMT). Both musicians' parents were old hippies and in their crazy 15-minute performance they strung together what they could. The main musical instrument was Ben’s laptop and one of their first songs was "Kids", which later became the biggest hit of their first album. They released EP Time To Pretend and opened for Of Montreal. MGMT was then taken on by Maureen Kenny of Columbia Records who offered them a record contract. A year later their first synthesizer pop album was born called ORACULAR SPECTACULAR. Three singles from the album came from their beginnings before their career at Sony, including "Kids". "Kids" became their mega hit and caught the attention even of Nicolas Sarkozy, who without the label's permission used the song on his web site. He didn't know, he paid... MGMT used the financial settlement for charitable works. In December 2008 ORACULAR SPECTACULAR sold more than 1.6 million copies around the world.
Before recording the second album Ben studied the autobiography of musician Julian Cope, who described his experiences with LSD after the success of the band Orange Juice and his journey to Druidism – he remembered the statement, which MGMT prepared for the second campaign and the second album – "everyone expects a lot from you, but the fact that you know it makes you a weirder creature..." In the spring of 2009 in Malibu, Ben, Andrew and Pete met "Sonic Boom" Kember, once a member of the legendary Spacemen 3 and now a member of the band Spectrum. This led to the creation of the new album CONGRATULATIONS. Kember lent them his favourite music, demonstrated strange rituals and prepared various teas. Three other musicians joined up (Matt Asti, bass guitar, Will Berman, drums and James Richardson, guitar) and in the house in the magical canyon a recording studio was created. In Ben's words, Kember pushed him into pop which will "shoot into your brain and grab your heart." A unique album was created, which hearkens back to Syd Barrett and the psychedelic playfulness of other bands from the 60s. The lyrics have lost the naivety of the first album; the theme is the reverse side of current obsessions – hedonism, rock fame and the like. With their second album MGMT have raised the bar of contemporary popular music extremely high. Seeing them live is a must.
