Czech-Polish Solidarity Concert
3/11/2009 20:00 - A rock concert celebrating the Polish overture to the Velvet Revolution.
The concert will feature the biggest stars of the Polish underground scene of the 1980s, Lech Janerka and Wojciech Waglewski’s band Voo Voo, which will also present its collaborative project with the Ukrainian band Hajdamaky. The third musical event of the evening will feature legends of the Czech underground Pavel Zajíček and DG307.
THE SOUNDS AND REVERBERATIONS OF SOLIDARITY
From November 3 – 5, 1989 a festival of independent Czechoslovak culture was held in Vratislav. The event was the culmination of the many years of collaboration between the Polish anti-communist opposition and Czech dissidents in the framework of Polish-Czechoslovak solidarity. Thanks to the rapid democratic changes in Poland it was possible for representatives of the Czech exile and the local opposition to freely meet in Vratislav (at least those who managed to get through the closed border). Thousands of young Czechs heard artists such as Karel Kryl and Jaroslav Hutka live for the first time. Kryl concluded his performance with the legendary words: “Next time we’ll meet in Prague.” He did not realize that his wish would come true less than a month later.
The concert called Sounds and Reverberations of Solidarity, which the Polish Institute in Prague is organizing in collaboration with the European Centre for Solidarity (Gdansk) on the 20th anniversary of this event, aims to remind us of this significant chapter on the Czech road to democracy. It is a symbol of international cooperation in the common battle against totalitarianism.
The concert also has links to our recent history. The biggest stars of the Polish independent scene in the 1980s have been invited to participate, artists like Lech Janerka and Wojciech Waglewski, whose music was a voice of freedom for young people at that time.
Solidarity is not just a thing of the past, however. At the Prague concert, Voo Voo will present its collaborative project with the dynamic Ukrainian band Hajdamaky, the formation of which was connected with the period of the “Orange Revolution” in that country.
The third musical performance of the evening will be Czech underground legend Pavel Zajíček and DG307.
The project is sponsored by: President Václav Havel, the co-organizer of the Vratislav festival Prince Karel Schwarzenberg and Alexander Vondra – one of the major representatives of Polish-Czechoslovak solidarity.
Organized by the Polish Institute in collaboration with the European Centre for Solidarity...
